Rosneft experts have developed a ground-breaking oil spill detection technology that will considerably enhance the effectiveness of environmental protection measures in the oil industry. The innovation lies in the integration of laser scanning of territories and aerial photography.

Currently, satellite imagery is used to search for oil spills, but its effectiveness is not sufficient. Water bodies, flooded areas and marshes are often mistaken for oil slicks. This can lead to incorrect conclusions. This is particularly relevant for Western Siberia, where there are many swamps and lakes adjacent to oil facilities.

This new technology enables the precise identification of both natural water bodies and oil spills. A 3D model of the landscape is created using a laser scanner. Furthermore, laser beams do not reflect off water surfaces, so they appear as voids on the map. In contrast to water, oil spills reflect laser beams, enabling their detection and mapping. Therefore, the company's scientists successfully converted the inherent limitations of the airborne laser scanning method into a beneficial feature for environmental monitoring.

Aerial photography complements laser scanning data by providing high-resolution digital images. This provides experts with a 3D image of the Earth's surface and the objects on it.
