As part of Volga Day, staff from Rosneft’s Samara enterprise organised a large-scale environmental campaign. Volunteers collected nine tonnes of waste from the banks of the great Russian river and tidied up popular recreational areas in the region.
Activists from Samaraneftgaz, Kuibyshev Refinery, Novokuibyshevsk Refinery, Saratov Refinery, Syzran Refinery, Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company, Novokuibyshevsk Oil and Additives Plant and the Company’s Samara Design Institute cleared three hectares of various household waste from the Volga’s riverbank areas. The waste was sorted and sent for recycling.
Environmental volunteering is an integral part of Rosneft’s corporate culture. Campaigns to improve public and natural areas are regularly held at the Company’s enterprises; plastic bottle caps, waste paper, and batteries are collected. Rosneft also places great emphasis on initiatives aimed at improving wastewater treatment efficiency, developing a water recycling system and promoting the rational use and restoration of water resources. Thanks to the efficient use of natural resources and the implementation of environmental programmes, Rosneft’s enterprises in the Samara region are making a significant contribution to conserving water resources in the Volga region.
Samaraneftegaz is implementing a comprehensive programme to conserve natural resources. The enterprise has stopped using surface water completely to maintain reservoir pressure; only recycled water is now used in production.
At the Novokuibyshevsk Refinery, the volume of wastewater has decreased by 40% over the last few years as a result of an environmental programme and water conservation measures. Over the course of a year, the plant increased its use of recycled water to 90% and reduced river water intake by 12%.
The Kuibyshev Refinery and the Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company treat their wastewater biologically using plants, a technology known as phytopurification. Implementing this unique project at these enterprises serves as an example of adopting environmental solutions that are proven to be economically and ecologically efficient. The Syzran Refinery is modernising its biological and physico-chemical wastewater treatment facilities, as well as its recycled water supply systems. All of the enterprise’s wastewater undergoes multi-stage treatment. By the end of 2025, the rate of recycled water use in production had reached 95.4%.
At the Novokuibyshevsk Oil and Additives Plant, measures are being implemented to conserve energy resources, including the rational use of water. Recycled water supply facilities have been built and commissioned.
For many years, Rosneft’s Samara Group of Enterprises has been carrying out consistent work to replenish the Volga basin’s aquatic biological resources. In 2025 alone, almost 370,000 fry of valuable and commercially important fish species were released into the Volga.
Oil workers at the Company actively participate in environmental initiatives every year to clean up coastal areas, rivers and springs, and to restore and improve natural water sources and the surrounding areas. These initiatives include ‘Water of Russia’, ‘Green Spring’, ‘Springs of the Samara Region’, ‘Volga Day’ and others.
