Rosneft Backs Construction of New Polar Bear Enclosures at Perm Zoo

19 August 2025

Rosneft has supported the construction of four polar bear enclosures with a total area of approximately 2,500 square metres at the new complex of the Perm Zoo. The Arctic predators named Seriku, Mila and Parma have been relocated from the zoo's former site to these modern enclosures.

All polar bears in Russian zoos have been under Rosneft's care since 2013 – currently 35 polar bears across 16 zoos nationwide. The company provides animal housing, feeding, veterinary support, and finances the renovation of cages. The Company has also developed special toys to enhance the physical activity of the animals. Rosneft is also implementing a programme to rescue and rehabilitate young polar bears left in the wild without maternal care. Since 2016, with the company's active support, six orphaned polar bear cubs have been rescued in the Russian Arctic sector.

The polar bear enclosures at Perm Zoo are equipped with air conditioning and swimming pools, allowing the polar bears to swim year-round. Additionally, the facilities feature water heating in winter and cooling in summer, as well as snow generators for the warmer months.

The zoo's new site opened on 7 August and represents a modern complex meeting international standards for wild animal care. The nature and landscape park covers 25 hectares, sixteen times larger than the former zoo.

The male Seriku was rescued on Bely Island in Yamal, whilst the female Mila was born at Kazan Zoo before moving to Perm Zoo. At the end of 2024, Mila and Seriku welcomed their first offspring – a female cub that residents of Perm region named Parma.
