With the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz (part of Rosneft’s oil production complex), scientists from the Tobolsk Research Station of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted large-scale monitoring of the Kunyaksky Reserve territories as part of a project to study northern forest reindeer.

Through aerial monitoring, environmentalists obtained more than 100 thousand pictures, covering an area of almost 60 thousand hectares. This unique data set will form the basis for estimating the population size of northern forest reindeer, a species included in the Tyumen Region’s Red Book. The next stage of the project involves developing a set of measures to protect the rare species’ habitat and increase its population.

The RN-Uvatneftegaz programme, which focuses on the study and conservation of northern forest reindeer, is of great practical importance for the Tyumen Region. Research in the region has not been conducted for over 20 years and there is currently no up-to-date information on the state of the population. Earlier in the course of the scientific project, the scientists confirmed that the deer permanently inhabit the reserve.

With grant support from RN-Uvatneftegaz, scientists have implemented several research projects of applied importance for biodiversity conservation in the Tyumen Region over the past five years. These projects have included programmes to assess the state of populations of rare bird and animal species in need of protection.

RN-Uvatneftegaz is implementing a comprehensive programme to study and preserve the Uvat District’s natural resources, making use of advanced technological solutions.
