Rosneft Studies Impact of Rare Minerals on Oil Production Processes

13 August 2026

Specialists at Rosneft’s Scientific Institute in Ufa are continuing their research into unique clay minerals—sepiolite and palygorskite—previously discovered in the carbonic reservoirs of one of the largest fields in the Republic of Bashkortostan. This new knowledge will improve the effectiveness of technologies used to intensify crude production.

During experiments, the scientists discovered that, upon contact with reagents, the minerals expand in volume, altering the flow direction of the process fluid within the rock. Identifying the areas of sepiolite and palygorskite distribution will enable more accurate modelling of fluid injection processes into the formation, as well as determining the depth to which the fluid penetrates the geological material.

Taking into account the specific characteristics of the reservoir’s mineral composition ensures a more informed selection of formation stimulation technologies. It also helps reduce operational risks, improve the effectiveness of geological and engineering measures, and enable a more complete utilisation of the productive interval during production. In the long term, this will also help increase the oil recovery factor through more effective use of reservoir stimulation technologies.

The development of technological potential is one of the key elements of the Rosneft-2023 Strategy. The Company pays special attention to innovation and breakthroughs, recognising the technological leadership as an essential element for competitive performance on the oil market.
