Rosneft Develops Online Course of Scientific Lectures on Polar Bears

20 January 2026

Rosneft, in collaboration with the non-governmental development institute Innopraktika, has launched an online course of popular science lectures entitled “Arctic Wanderer: The Polar Bear.” The course was created with the participation of scientists from the country’s leading scientific centre, A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Company’s Arctic Research Centre.

The course is available to everyone on the Lectorium educational platform. It includes 10 theme-based lectures with test assignments and is dedicated to the largest predator and main inhabitant of the Arctic – the polar bear. The lectures are based on materials from the atlas “Marine Mammals of Russia” produced by Rosneft. The author of the course is Svetlana Artemyeva, a research fellow at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution and head of Rosneft’s polar bear research expeditions.

In this course, students will learn interesting facts about polar bear - the master of the Arctic, the peculiarities of its behaviour, and the history of the species’ origin. The lecturers will also talk about the threats faced by polar bears and measures to help preserve these animals.

The course materials contain unique photographs and scientific data on the status of polar bears, obtained during many years of research by Rosneft. The educational course is designed for a wide audience and will be useful for anyone interested in the Arctic and its fauna, as well as those who want to broaden their horizons and learn more about this northern predator.

Conservation and protection of the polar bear is one of the main aspects of Rosneft’s massive environmental programme. The Company has been conducting expeditions to study polar bears since 2014. In 2024, Rosneft began a new four-year cycle of research as part of its Tamura corporate programme to preserve the biodiversity of Arctic ecosystems. As part of the new programme, three expeditions were conducted in 2025 to study the Arctic predator. Scientists needed to conduct the first comprehensive aerial survey of the Kara polar bear subpopulation in Russia. The specialists made 25 flights, covering a total distance of almost 24,000 km.

There are 35 polar bears in 16 zoos across the country under the patronage of Rosneft. The Company provides comprehensive animal care, including feeding, veterinary services, and the construction and repair of enclosures. Special toys have been developed to keep bears physically active. Rosneft also runs a programme to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned bear cubs in the wild. As a result of these efforts, six animals have been rescued in the Russian Arctic since 2016.

For Reference:

In 2020, Rosneft launched a lecture course on the biology of the Black and Azov Seas on the educational platform “Lectorium”. Experts in the field of geology, hydrology and biology of the seas took part in the development of the educational course. Attendees learned up-to-date information on the state of ecosystems of the Black and Azov Seas, as well as changes that occur in the water areas due to natural and anthropogenic factors.

In 2022, Rosneft together with Innopraktika and Lomonosov Moscow State University launched the “Open Lectures” online project on the “Battle of Minds” online platform. The series of lectures by the country’s leading geologists, biologists, geochemists, hydrometeorologists and other scientists is designed to promote appreciation of ecosystem integrity and broaden the understanding of ecology and the formation of land, water basins and seabed landscapes. In 2023, Rosneft and Innopraktika developed online lecture courses entitled “Mysteries of the Ocean: Marine Mammals of Russia” and “Flying Over the Ice: Seabirds of the Russian Arctic.” In 2024, the course “Flying Over the Ice: Seabirds of the Russian Arctic” won a prize in the international Edtek Award competition.
