Rosneft Contributing to Biodiversity Conservation

22 May 2025

The 22nd of May is International Day for Biological Diversity, a day that helps draw attention to the need to preserve the rich diversity of flora and fauna.

One of Rosneft’s key objectives in the regions where it operates is preserving biodiversity. The Company and its subsidiaries implement numerous grant programmes to support scientific and applied projects that study and protect rare species of animals and plants.

Earlier this year, the East Siberian Oil and Gas Company funded a research project aimed at assessing the populations of rare predators in Evenkia.  As part of the project, staff from the Tunguska State Nature Reserve will study the impact of the current state of the Evenki taiga on populations of bears, wolves, sable and lynx, the latter of which has not previously been observed in the region. A set of recommendations for the organisation of rational nature management in the region will be developed based on the research results. With the support of Vostsibneftegaz, the Red Book of Evenkia was previously published by Siberian Federal University. This book provides brief information on the appearance, habitat, lifestyle and population of 45 rare regional animals.

RN-Vankor oil workers supported projects to create a training manual on the key bioindicator of Arctic ecosystems, the wild northern reindeer of Taymyr, as well as studies into the current state of the musk ox population on the peninsula and the status and welfare of the main commercial fish species in Taymyr’s waters.  The study of commercial fish populations is of great importance, primarily for the indigenous peoples of the North, for whom fishing is an integral part of their traditional way of life.

With the support of the Samara group of enterprises, which includes the Samara Neftegaz, Kuibyshevsky, Novokuibyshevsky and Syzransky oil refineries, the Novokuibyshevskaya Petrochemical Company and the Novokuibyshevsky Oil and Additives Plant, all located in the Samara Luka National Park, ornithologists are implementing a project aimed at preserving the white-tailed eagle.  It is the largest and rarest bird in the Volga region. The species is listed in both the Russian and international Red Data Books. Monitoring of nesting sites has been organised within the national park. This has enabled areas requiring special conservation measures to be identified, as well as measures to control tourist traffic.

Tyumenneftegaz supports projects that aim to preserve the ecosystem of Solyonoye Lake. Scientists from Tyumen State University have been conducting complex ecological and biological research for three years. As a result, over 450 species of animals and plants have been discovered, some of which are rare or protected. The oil workers also enhanced the coastal area by laying eco-trails and installing household waste containers.

With the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz, scientists from the Tobolsk Research Station of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are conducting a study of the forest reindeer population in the Tyumen Region. Between 2022 and 2024, large-scale monitoring was carried out and photo traps were installed to confirm the presence of the endangered animal in the region.  A set of measures has been developed to preserve the habitat, create conservation conditions and encourage population growth.

With the enterprise’s support, the V.I. Shpilman Scientific and Analytical Centre for Rational Subsoil Use previously monitored the condition of 390 large lakes in the region. Scientists from the Tyumen Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences also developed an electronic database of rare plants in the Uvat District, including data on over 50 species.  Ornithologists at Tyumen State University have developed measures to increase the population of rare bird species, and have created an electronic reference book entitled «Birds of the South of the Tyumen Region».

Together with scientists from Zapovedniy Priamurye, the Komsomolsk Refinery continues to implement the «Under a Strong Wing» project for the conservation of the endangered Steller’s sea eagle. As part of the project, ornithologists set up cameras to monitor bird families in the reserve. In addition, scientists will conduct research on samples of river water and fish that birds eat during the summer period. This information will form the basis of a set of measures designed to protect this rare bird, which is classified as vulnerable in the Red Book of Russia.

Annual monitoring of the Okhotomorsk grey whale population on the north-eastern shelf of Sakhalin Island is carried out during the implementation of the Sakhalin-1 Project. Since 1997, the programme has incorporated whale counting and photography, acoustic monitoring, observation of mammal behaviour, and the study of their prey. All studies involve the country’s leading scientific organisations.
