Rosneft Supports Reindeer Herders’ Congress in Yakutia

25 March 2025

The IV Reindeer Herders’ Congress was held in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) with the support of Taas-Yuryakh Neftegazodobycha (Rosneft subsidiary). The large-scale event was attended by more than 250 participants from 20 districts of the Republic, as well as guests from Mongolia and China.

The Congress is held every four years in Yakutia and is of great importance to the small indigenous peoples of the North who traditionally herd reindeer — the Evens, Evenks, Dolgans, Yukaghirs and others.

One of the key areas of Rosneft’s social policy is the preservation of the national culture of the indigenous peoples of the North and their traditional way of life. The Company’s enterprises implement numerous social projects in their regions of operation, developing infrastructure in northern villages, supporting reindeer herding families, and improving the material and technical base of educational institutions and social and medical facilities in the ancestral homelands of indigenous minorities.

Aysen Nikolayev, Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), attended the opening of the Reindeer Herders’ Congress and thanked Rosneft for its support in organising such a large-scale event.

During the Congress, participants discussed issues related to the preservation of traditional lifestyles, attracting young people to the old national crafts and other topical issues. The Arctic State Agrotechnological University held training courses for reindeer herders.

The congress concluded with the Republican Reindeer Herders’ Games, a colourful celebration of national culture and sporting traditions. Participants competed in reindeer sled races, harness throwing, pulling a skier on a reindeer and combined relay races. The spectacular competitions were complemented by performances by ethnic creative groups, displays of traditional national costumes and stylised clothing of the indigenous minorities of North Yakutia.

The event also included a children’s drawing competition «Northern Reindeer», a photo exhibition «Nomadic World», a folk crafts fair and a national competition «Nomadic Family».
