Rosneft Supports Development of Online Course on Evenki Language and Culture

28 March 2025

As part of a grant programme from the East Siberian Oil and Gas Company (Vostsibneftegaz), a subsidiary of Rosneft, scientists from the Siberian Federal University (SFU) have launched an online course on the Evenki language and culture. Designed for students from remote settlements and boarding schools in the Evenki Municipality, the course helps students learn the Evenki language and become familiar with the culture and life of the indigenous people.

The course aims to develop knowledge of the basics of the Evenki language and the unique world view preserved in Evenki culture. The course has 18 modules and navigation through the material depends on the learner’s performance.

The course developers piloted the training materials at Baikitskaya secondary school. Scientists conducted lessons — discussions, lectures, careers games — for students in grades 4-11. Students were introduced to the main modules and technical features of the course.

At the beginning of the school year, everyone will be able to start training. The programme allows for a personalised approach to ensure each student learns more effectively and includes weekly monitoring to identify and address gaps in knowledge.

Cultural and linguistic projects have been successfully implemented in the past thanks to the Vostsibneftegaz grant programme. In 2022, scientists developed and published a manual for students to study the culture and language of the unique Keto people. This manual is widely used in educational institutions to promote a deeper understanding of linguistic heritage and respect for cultural diversity. It also includes interactive exercises and materials to make the learning process more enjoyable and effective. Previously, an electronic version of the Evenki-Russian dictionary «Evedy-luchady turaruk», a collection of Evenki craftsmen’s works and a unique alphabet «Evenkia: from A to Z» created by children from Baikit village, Evenki district, Krasnoyarsk region, were published.

One of the key areas of Rosneft’s social policy is the preservation of the national culture of the indigenous peoples of the North and their traditional way of life. Subsidiaries run many social, charitable and grant programmes to support scientific and applied projects.

For reference:

The East Siberian Oil and Gas Company, a subsidiary of Rosneft Oil Company, develops the Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoye oil and condensate field in the Evenkiysky District of Krasnoyarsk Territory. Over the years of its work in the region, Vostsibneftegaz has implemented numerous social, charitable and grant programmes with applications for Evenkia.

The Vostsibneftegaz grant programme has been in place since 2014. During this time, the oilmen supported 29 scientific projects, including the preservation of the Evenki language, the reconstruction of the Ethnopedagogical Centre in the Tura settlement, the development of the first Red Book of Evenkia, the revival of the endangered Evenki native husky breed, and others. Implementation of the grant schemes helps save the unique natural environment, national culture, traditional way of life and cultural authenticity of indigenous population of Evenkiya.
