Bashneft Releases 565,000 Fry into Water Bodies

19 August 2021

Bashneft (an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company) released about 565,000 whitefish and sterlet fry into the water bodies of the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Nenets Autonomous District in the spring-summer period of 2021.

The artificial stocking of Russian reservoirs with fish is carried out as part of the implementation of Rosneft Oil Company’s strategic tasks in environmental protection, including a set of measures for ecosystems and biodiversity protection and restoration of natural resources.

Bashneft employees released 130,000 whitefish fry into the Pechora River basin in the Nenets Autonomous District this May. More than 435,000 sterlet fry were released into the Belaya River, as well as into the Pavlovskoye, Nizhnekamskoye and Votkinskoye reservoirs in July and August.

Fish farms of the Perm region and the Holy Virgin Mary Monastery of Kazan in Samara were the main suppliers of fry. The fry gained the required weight of 3 grams in a favourable natural environment with an abundant food supply. The fry were transported to their new habitats by specially equipped vehicles.

All fry releases were controlled by representatives of the territorial offices of the Federal Agency for Fishery, which determine specific water bodies and locations for the fish releases. Water bodies are selected based on optimal conditions for breeding and recovery of the population. According to the agency’s experts, artificial stocking helps to maintain the ecological balance of water bodies, and the raised fry adapt well in open water.

The stocking will continue in the autumn. Bashneft plans to release 110,000 fry of valuable fish species into the Kuibyshevskoye and Nizhnekamskoye reservoirs in September 2021.

Note for Editors:

An important part of Bashneft’s environment-oriented programme is the restoration of ichthyofauna and forest resources in the regions where the Company operates. The enterprise released more than 1.2 million fry of valuable fish species in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Khanty-Mansiysk and Nenets Autonomous Districts in 2020. In 2021, Bashneft performed the largest land remediation in the past 20 years. More than 3.4 million coniferous seedlings have been planted in the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Tyumen Region. The total area of greenery has exceeded 800 hectares.
